NoHLA's Racing for Health Justice

Thank you everyone
for making NoHLA’s
2nd Racing for Health Justice a glowing success!
The Triathlon this year was Mercer Island’s Escape from the Rock. Our swimmers enjoyed their half-mile swim in Lake Washington at Luther Burbank Park. After a short barefoot run to the transition area they High-five the bikers on to their 8.5-mile out-and-back bike ride in the closed-to-traffic express lanes of I-90 floating bridge. Finally, our limber runners tackled the 2.5-mile run up, over, and back again along the jog path through beautiful Mercer Island.
What an amazing job from all our participants, their supporters, and team sponsors! NoHLA is facing an active autumn/winter seasons.Your contributions helps us continue our battle in protecting health care that is facing yet another round of deep budget cuts. We are also working hard leading a stakeholder group providing input and advocacy on Washington State's proposed health reform waiver, advocating on behalf of consumers as national health reform is implemented in Washington, and continuing working to protect access to critical safety net health programs in the midst of severe budget cuts in Washington State.
NoHLA would like to send out a special thanks to
-
Mindy & Paul Blaski who took on the challenge of cycling & running and raised over $1,500! This was Mindy & Paul’s first triathlon. With only 2 months to prepare they not only met their goal of completing the two legs but smashed their Fundraising target!
-
NoHLA’s Staff Attorney Lori Buchsbaum and Tod Haggard from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also challenged themselves with handling 2 legs on their teams, NoHLA’s TRI Force and NoHLA’s Surge, both doing the swim & cycle legs. Even with the added training hours Lori shattered her fundraising target collecting over $2,000 and, joined with Charles Mitchell from Northwest Justice Project, NoHLA’s TRI Force collected $2,255! Tod was joined up with Scott Crain, also from Northwest Justice Project, in collecting over $500!
-
TRI 4 NoHLA team made up of swimmer Tegan Callahan, cyclist Hafoc Yates, and runner Emily Brice won the All Women’s Relay division! Hafoc fell just short of her fundraising goal but vows “IF this year making the offer of cutting my hair off to reach my goal didn’t work then next year I’ll try promising cutting my hair off if I fail to reach my target!” But with Tegan surpassing her target and Emily and Hafoc almost reaching their’s TRI 4 NoHLA collected over $800.
-
This year NoHLA had a triathlete, Hilary Bolles, who won her division and another athlete that surpassed her fundraising target by collecting over $400!
Thanks to all for a successful event! We are looking forward to our 3rd Racing for Health Justice in 2011.
